Gate Not Lowered, 79 Dead In East German Crash
An East German commission linked a gate tender at a state railway crossing to a fatal collision with a gasoline truck in Langenweddingen. The double decker train plowed into the truck as the barrier was only one third down. The attendant was arrested as 79 were killed and 54 injured, many critically. The town lies near Magdeburg, close to West Germany.

West German Budget Cut Aims to Trim Army and Road Budget
Bonn AP reports Chancellor Kiesinger announced Friday that West Germany will cut the armed forces and balance the budget for the next four years. A truck explosion spilled nearly 4000 gallons of burning gasoline, setting fire to four cars and the station.

Cedar Rapids issues $1 million in June building permits
The Cedar Rapids building safety department issued permits for 119 new buildings valued at $1,041,395.90 in June, including 53 single family dwellings worth $717,547, with 10 commercial/industrial, 38 garages, one carport, two churches, ten portable classrooms, one service station and four miscellaneous permits. The department also approved remodels and additions for 259 buildings and issued 53 miscellaneous permits, 40 for new fences.
