State Liquor Sales Gain With Beer Tax Decline in Iowa
Iowa figures show state liquor stores sold about 12.5 million dollars of liquor in the year to June 30, up more than a million from 1938-39 and 3.8 million above 1936-37. Beer tax receipts fell nearly 7.5 percent from 1936-37 to 1939-40, reflecting a national downward trend. Officials caution the liquor gain may reflect bootleg replacement rather than more hard liquor consumption, as store outlets grew to 174 from 90 since 1934.
