Macedonia rebels agree to open-ended cease-fire

In a breakthrough brokered by NATO and the European Union, Macedonian leaders and ethnic Albanian rebels agreed to an open-ended cease-fire aimed at disarming rebels and easing tensions. Wife of German chancellor Helmut Kohl’s widow dies by suicide

Hannelore Kohl 68, longtime supporter of Helmut Kohl, died by her own hand after a sun allergy left her unable to tolerate daylight. Authorities say she conveyed the decision in farewell letters to her husband, sons, and friends. Kohl rushed home from Berlin after learning of her death.

Japan to gain custody of U. S. sergeant in rape case

The United States agrees to turn over Air Force Sgt. Timothy Woodland to Japan after assurances of legal representation and an interpreter. The suspect, stationed at Kadena Air Base, is accused of raping a 20-year-old Okinawan woman June 29 in Chatan town and has denied the allegations.

Witch suspects slain in Congo violence rises in north east

Ugandan Brig. Gen. Henry Tumukunde said villagers have killed about 200 people suspected of witchcraft in rebel-held northeastern Congo since June 15. The killings come as diseases go untreated amid Congo's three year war. Ugandan troops were redeployed to stop the violence.
