Washington AP dispatch notes the apricalture department reports hog cholera rising through the year ended June 89. Officials record 163 infected herds comprising 61,400 hogs, up from 76 herds and 19,000 hogs in 1971 72.
Linn county Better Crops Club sets July deadline for yield contest entries. Kenn Mijlaap, secretary treasurer, notes eligibility for corn or soybeans with certified seeds and asks entrants to include dues. Prize details show a total around 93,000 with $5 dues and $2 per entry.
Washington AP reports a new Agriculture Department worksheet shows farm output rising by about 11 percent in 1972 from 1967 while total farm labor hours dropped to a record low 62 billion. Mechanization and efficiency drove the drop and higher production, with historical context comparing 1950 and 1980 figures and noting livestock and crop productivity gains based on a 1967 base year.
USDA ends federal inspection of livestock at public stockyards as part of a general reorganization. Officials say curtailing yard inspections enables personnel to focus on more important disease control work and improved animal health efforts.
INDEPENDENCE The Buchanan county Master Growers contest for corn and soybean yields is sponsored by the Independence Chamber of Commerce. Deadline for entering is Friday, July 20. Entry forms and fees must be submitted to the chamber by that date. The corn field must be at least 10 acres. two acres harvested for soybeans. The contest is part of the Iowa Crop Improvement Association program.
