In Pasadena NASA celebrated a July Fourth weekend success as a deep space mission punched a barrel-sized hole in a comet. Project manager Rick Grammier lauded the brighter-than-expected white flash marking a bold act in America's birthday weekend.
Images from the Impactor probe show Temper 1 as it nears collision at 23 000 mph. The source says the comet looks potato shaped, not pickle like as first thought. Michael A Hearn of the University of Maryland leads the mission.

The Cedar Rapids Navy Reserve Center sits on a hill overlooking the Cedar River and faces closure by BRAC.
