Decorah Man Drowns Playing Frisbee in Cedar River

A 20 year old Decorah man David C Wenthe drowned in the Cedar River at Palisades Kepler State Park after his group moved downstream to a sandbar. Wenthe who could not swim disappeared after leaping to catch a Frisbee and sank into a hidden hole in the river bottom. His cousin Gary Bock and friends Vicki Dingbaum Brian Yauslin and Tanya Klavins were unable to rescue him as rescuers from Linn County pulled his body from the swift waters around 7 48 p.m. The incident underscores river dangers from currents and shifting sand bars despite waist deep water. The group had moved away from a crowded sandbar and believed conditions were safe. Sheriff Dennis Blome warned against entering the Cedar River.
