Horticulture Prizes Named Premier Exhibitors at All Iowa Fair
Two Cedar Rapids men earned premier exhibitor honors in the All Iowa fair horticulture division. David G. Novak led in fruit with 20 blue ribbons plus two artistic displays, while Warren Everhart topped vegetables with 14 blue ribbons. Other top winners include Cedar Crest Farms with 12 first-place fruit and vegetable entries, Merle Williams with ten, and several individuals earning multiple blue ribbons across categories.

Yearlings Sweep Open Hereford Show at All-Iowa Fair
Yearlings won all open Hereford championship honors at the All-Iowa fair. Buell Jackson and Sons of Mechanicville displayed the grand champion bull TMF D4 Mischief 462, while Wayne Lewis of Fontanelle owned the grand champion female JE Lady Britisher 417. Lenth Herefords of Postville claimed the reserve female, and Ewald Brothers of Waldorf, Minnesota, showed the reserve champion bull Klondike 23x 85F. The grand champion female was a spring yearling, as was the reserve, LH Ms Y Designer, the only one born in its current herd. Champions came from Montana, Wisconsin, and Manitoba, Canada. In 4-H and FFA, beef heifer show the champions were Dawn Paul for Shorthorn, Kevin Lamparek for Angus, and Debra Heatherlin for Hereford.

Winning Runs in Families at All Iowa Fair Show
Cedar Rapids families dominated the Garden Flower show final section at the All Iowa fair on Friday. Mrs. Charles Rohlena led with 11 blue ribbons, while her daughter-in-law Mrs. Robert Rohlena earned two firsts. Rohlena girls Vicky Prachar and Janelle also took three blue ribbons in the youth division.Mrs. James Venneman and daughter Shelley each claimed three blue ribbons, with Luanne and Margaret earning firsts. Sweepstakes went to Rosella Richardson with four blue ribbons and 24 total, flagged as the top exhibitor. Rosella’s win caps a day of numerous blue ribbons and rosettes for others including Mrs. Carl Franks and her husband. Debbie Steinbrech of Solon also won blue ribbons Friday.

Loren’s first year showing his own hogs and Olson Spot Farm wins Poland China and Spotted grand and reserve. Brothers Warrick duplicate Hampshire wins with grand and reserve champions.

Supplemental Security Income Payments Rise in July
Basic supplemental security income will increase to 157.70 for singles and 236.60 for couples. The changes apply to those with no or reduced other income, announced by James Wood of the Cedar Rapids Social Security district. An eight percent rise in Social Security payments was also announced to begin in July.
