East Iowa Summer Calendar events list highlights July to Sept

A long list of upcoming local events in East Iowa from July through September. Highlights include Independence Day festivities at Independence airport, July 5 fly-in breakfast, Central City fairground horse races, Keota Fun Festival with a kids parade and sports, and Wyoming fair July 10-12 with steer shows. Also planned are Campbell County fairs, Cedar Rapids tournaments, 4-H events, horse shows, parades, and the Roll-Belle festival in Williamsburg. Multiple county fairs, festivals, and community gatherings are scheduled across towns such as Iowa City, Oxford Junction, Decorah, Manchester, North English, Vinton, Mount Pleasant, and Cedar Rapids, with dates staggered from July 5 to Sept 7.

Psychedelic Swiss Creators Save Cedar Rapids Studio

Bruce and Nola Bucknell and their sons Curt and Del transformed a derelict 1840s brick building into their home and art studio on McGregor's east–west street. They stripped and rebuilt interiors, reinforced walls, added utilities, and created a limestone cave workshop while preserving exterior walls. Their puppetry and sculpture work thrives amid a rebuilt space that housed weekend living quarters on the second floor.

Use of Student Tracking System Slated To Decline

System gang of Navajo workers replaces ties on Rock Island

A crew of 27 Navajo Indians along the Rock Island tracks near West Liberty replaces 1,000 to 1,200 railroad ties daily. The Gallup, New Mexico based workers travel across the Rock Island system and have already replaced over 90,000 ties this season, with more photos on page 6B.
