Railroads Win Permission To Drop Flagman In Washington Ia
The Iowa commerce commission overruled Washington city and allowed two railroads the Rock Island and Milwaukee to discontinue flagman at the North Fourth street crossing. The $4519 yearly cost is shared by the two lines. Traffic issues stem from a poorly lit underpass at North Second street, forcing children to walk extra blocks to Stewart school. Protesters said children relied on the flagman over automatic crossing devices installed in 1951.
