Just Folks by Edgar A. Guest on July Fourth
The poem recalls the speaker’s youth when Independence Day celebrations began before dawn with fireworks and noise. He notes the risk, fear among adults, ambulance visits, and hospital calls, but says those days are past and prefers calmer, saner celebrations of the nation.
Griner Petition To Rezone Fifth Avenue Property Denied
The city plan commission denied George R. Griner’s request to rezone his residential property at 1203 Fifth Avenue SE to commercial after residents filed a 57-signature remonstrance. The panel reaffirmed a policy against rezoning single lots and said no need exists for more commercial space in the area.
