Iowa Study Seeks Link Between Bovine and Human Leukemia

Dr. Kelley J. Denham of the University of Iowa reports mixed results on a possible connection between cattle leukemia and human leukemia. In Iowa, 21 herds with bovine leukemia were found among 846 cattle, with no antibodies detected in 45 farmers, 30 patients, or 83 veterinarians. A later study examines 155 rural counties and 80 infected counties to compare leukemias, while future work will test blood and bone marrow from rural leukemia patients for bovine virus evidence. Pasteurization appears to destroy the virus, and chimps exposed to bovine leukemia virus show antibodies but no leukemia to date.
