Sokol Party Arrives in Cedar Rapids
A large Cedar Rapids crowd greeted visiting Sokol members at Union Station with welcome speeches and flowers. Paul Jerabek and Vera Vitek posed with Czech leader Theodore Hlubucek, then the party travelled by bus with a motorcycle escort to City Hall where Don Hines, acting mayor, designated July 3 and 4 as Sokol days in Cedar Rapids.

Memoir of a flood season misadventure with Mississippi
Reporter Henry McLemore recounts a 1930s flood assignment up the Mississippi, from New Orleans to Memphis, riding improvised boats, dodging wrecks, and filing vivid stories about flood scenes while enduring ice, cold, and danger. He recalls Red Dawson’s help, a makeshift boat, a drunken pilot, and a dramatic river rescue by Red Cross. The tale ends with a humorous expense claim and a promise to finish later.
