Soybean Association Secretary Questions McClave Variety
George M Strayer executive secretary of the American Soybean Association says a questionable new McClave variety has been seeded in several Iowa sections this spring. He notes it originated in Ohio and is promoted as far west as Iowa with the main objection being its lower oil content. Tests show McClave lags 3 to 5 percent in oil, potentially cutting value per bushel by 16 to 40 cents. Seed is smaller and yellow compared with Mukden Chu Dunsfield and Silini varieties.
