Scientists link scavenger cells to osteoporosis in postmenopausal women
Washington AP reports Indianapolis researchers led by Dr. Stavros Manolagas at the Veterans Medical Center and Indiana University found estrogen loss after menopause triggers overproduction of osteoclast bone scavengers via interleukin 6. This shifts balance from bone building to bone destroying, explaining pain fragility and the widow's hump. The study, to be published in Science, may guide new drug development.
