Court OKs Iran financial deal and hostage settlement
The Supreme Court unanimously upheld President Carter’s actions in freeing 52 American hostages by approving a plan to transfer about 2.3 billion dollars in Iranian assets held in U S banks by July 19. The decision, announced at term end, also allows 1 billion to go to the tribunal for claim settlements and notes possible future relief in the Court of Claims for other claimants.

Vinton man dies in silo fall
A 21-year-old Vinton man Cory Dean Shields died after falling 20 feet into a silo on the Lynn Miller farm near Jesup. Rescuers lowered a stretcher to recover the body after Shields lost his air supply and mask during the fall. He died at People's Memorial Hospital in Independence. the cause of death was not released.
