Reconsider Emission Standards for Cars in 1983 Model Year
A National Academy of Sciences report urges reevaluating the 1981 carbon monoxide standard as potentially too strict and argues extensions for automakers may be warranted. It notes emission controls can raise nitrogen oxides and calls closer scrutiny of auto contributed CO calculations. The council says technology exists for manufacturers to meet the standard, with larger firms ahead and smaller suppliers facing delays, and all should comply by 1983.
