Longevity Pay Plan Irks Cedar Rapids City Employees
Cedar Rapids municipal workers oppose the new longevity pay system begun in January. Public Improvements Commissioner Richard Phillips has a petition from 94 public works staff seeking changes. The plan shifts to two lump sum bonuses, June and December, instead of biweekly payments, causing higher tax withholdings and financial concerns for those with dependents. Auditor Bob McMahan cites lack of separate-check capability and tax withholding issues, noting overall annual effect remains similar though timing hurts cash flow. Some workers could file revised W-4 forms. returning to biweekly payments would undo the January advantage of invested funds.
