Seed Guidance Aims to Boost Bromegrass Supply
Ames based Soil Conservation official Maurice Heath urged Iowa farmers to harvest seed from southern bromegrass fields for the land-use program. With Nebraska and Kansas droughts last fall cutting into last year’s seed, supplies are scarce and prices high. Heath advised testing head development with bromelegume mixtures, then harvesting seed if promising, otherwise using crop for hay or pasture, and drying seed on a floor before bagging. Since 1943 to 1946 districts produced 42,188 pounds of clean seed.
