Waterloo officers shot as suspect killed in city
Two Waterloo police officers were shot and the suspect Kelvin Lee Plain Jr. was killed after a morning pursuit near Sullivan Park. Plain fired on officers after a Tasering and a chase through East Fourth and Cottage streets, with dash cam footage confirming the fatal exchange. Both officers were hospitalized in stable condition. The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation is handling the inquiry.

Monarch Research Project loses equipment in Marion shed fire
A machine shed on the Monarch Research Project property in Marion burned Saturday around 4 45 p m destroying two trucks a Bobcat and other large equipment. No injuries were reported and the cause is under investigation. Lakeside Road was closed for about three hours as Linn County and area departments responded. The nonprofit headquartered at 4970 Lakeside Rd focuses on reestablishing native habitats for pollinators in Iowa. The event center and Monarch Research Station remained undamaged.
