Two armed men robbed the Farmers State Bank in Whittemore at 10 15 a m taking between 606 and 706 dollars. They fled north toward Minnesota, eluding Kossuth county and Minnesota police with a half hour head start as officers opened a broad search.
David B Ballengee, 92, of Clayton West Virginia believes he is the nation's oldest postmaster based on his long service in the postal department and continued duties.

Iowa City expects a Public Works Administration loan to aid repairs on the fire damaged American Legion hall. A revoked regulation allowing 15 percent labor cost support restored the 45 percent loan policy, raising optimism that federal funds will cover a larger share. The city was previously told its grant was approved pending congressional appropriations.
Sixty years of married life were observed Tuesday when children of Mr. and Mrs. L. L. Iverson honored their parents in a gathering at the parental home in Decorah. Mr. Iverson was born December 7, 1852, and Ingri Severson Iverson was born January 12, 1856.

Kennethea Kay Schmitt five day old daughter of a Sidney couple died in Hamburg after Tuesday surgery to insert a feeding tube in her stomach. Dr R C Danley said the infant was born with an incomplete esophagus and planned two major operations to correct the condition. Her condition worsened after the procedure despite oxygen and stimulants.
Lester F. Bahr a 20 year old from Ladora was sentenced to a year in jail by Judge James P. Gaffney after pleading guilty to forgery. He admitted attempting to pass a shoe purchase check at Lawlor clothing in Victor. Bail and prior checks noted. eleven months suspended on parole to his grandfather Chris Kahler.

An early Tuesday alarm sent Maquoketa firefighters to the Gong cafe where gasoline leaking from a coffee urn heater caught fire threatening the frame building. George Hess, an employee, suffered minor burns on his hands while extinguishing the blaze before firemen arrived.
W A Ehlerman a 41 year old former wholesale jeweler of Sioux City was sentenced to three years in the state penitentiary at Fort Madison by Judge Robert H. Munger. The judge overruled a motion for a new trial. Ehlerman faced charges of conspiring to defraud an insurance company with a gang led by Harry Reeves who is serving 40 years at Fort Madison for related crimes.
