The 1933 federal fiscal year closed with a deficit of about 1.75 billion dollars, the second largest peace time shortfall on record. Expenditures totaled around 3.95 billion while receipts from taxes and other sources reached 2.2 billion, forcing public borrowing to push the national debt to 22.5 billion. If the Reconstruction Finance Corporation advances were included, the deficit would rise to about 3 billion. Receipts grew late in the year due to rising business activity and beer sales.
