Iowa City weighs response after Eric Shaw shooting

City officials and critics debate accountability after the Aug. 30 shooting of 31 year old Eric F. Shaw by Officer Jeffrey Gillaspie. A $1.5 million settlement prompted calls for openness and possible policy changes as a special council meeting is set to review police procedures and possible independent review.

Jay Shaw says the settlement fails to address accountability or criminal responsibility for the killing of his son Eric. He notes the money cannot replace their loss, vows to memorialize Eric, and urges continued pursuit of justice while condemning the city’s role. The family plans to use funds for memorials and public good aligned with Eric’s values.
