Bitter cold grips much of Iowa with wind chills reaching 50 below zero. National Weather Service forecaster Chuck Myers warns residents to prepare for extreme arctic conditions as overnight lows plunge to 10 to 15 below in Eastern Iowa. The extended forecast through Monday shows continued cold with highs of 5 to 15 and lows near or below zero. Readings ranged from 6 below in Spencer and Mason City to 27 above in the Quad Cities. Winds gusting to 35 mph deepen the chill and lessen warmth even as temperatures remain below normal.
