Soviet Ice Voyage Forges Arctic Sea Route
MOSCOW UPI reports a nine-ship Soviet flotilla opened a winter Arctic sea link from Yenissei to Murmansk, using five icebreakers and four cargo ships. The 1,300 mile, 17 day voyage through heavy ice shortened the usual six month Arctic shipping season and carried coal nickel timber and copper. The fleet arrived in Murmansk to cheers, despite minus two degrees, after crossing the 27 mile Yugorsky Shar Strait in 22 hours with gasping ice.
