DES MOINES Gov Robert Ray again balked at saying whether he will run for a third term. He plans a campaign HQ and may meet President Nixon in Washington. Ray urged Midwest focus, rural development funds, and noted cautious farm groups toward Secretary Earl Butz amid talk of economic and political pressures in the region.

Chin-Up Drive Seeks Funds for Youth Service

Hungry children in Pakistan, Bangladesh and India will benefit from a gymnastic program at Washington high school Tuesday night. Low Rent Housing Bill Moves to Governor

DES MOINES Iowa senate opens week by accepting house amendments to a bill eliminating public referenda on low rent housing projects. The vote 33 to 11 sends the bill to the governor. The chief amendment lets a city council decide if a municipality will pursue a low rent project and requires studies to determine need.

Environmental Quality Bill Out Protested

DES MOINES UPI Governor Robert Ray urged House members to restore a provision allowing the proposed state department of environmental quality to oversee chemical pollution control. The House removed the chemical division, leaving pollution oversight to agriculture, risking a partial job. University of Iowa law professors urged maintaining the Senate plan, including the chemical division, for a full water quality management program.

Man Held In Linn County Jail On Assault Charges

Jerry R. Thomas, 29, of Cedar Rapids, jailed in Linn County on a 2000 dollar bond for assault with intent to inflict great bodily injury and assault and battery after an early Sunday altercation at 210 Ridge Drive. Arrested by Marion police and Linn County sheriff, warrants from Vince Hatt justice court. Also notes a separate arrest of Dean C Starr, 24, for possession of a controlled substance after a disturbance on Cedar Rapids south side. released on 500 dollar bond.

Funeral services were held in Tampa for Dr. Walter A. Steigleman 64 former journalism professor at the University of Iowa Indiana Pennsylvania Wisconsin and Ohio He died Friday and had lived in Tampa five years after retiring from Iowa He wrote journalism books served as a U N conference representative and worked as a Navy news analyst during World War II Survivors include his widow Norma a son Walter A Steigleman Jr two brothers and three sisters.

Fire Chief Soener Receives 50-Year Service Award

Independence Fire Chief Paul Soener was honored with a 50-year service award at the annual firemen banquet. He joined the department in 1922, has served as chief since 1941, and will complete 50 years in November 1972.

County Attorney Winds Up Probe

Johnson County Attorney Carl Goetz announced the office has concluded an investigation into alleged police misconduct in Iowa City. He noted part of the inquiry covered the 1966 jail cell death of Charles Vermace, but said no criminal charges will be filed.
