New Test Assesses Carryover Soybean Seed Quality
Lincoln Nebraska described at Crop Improvement day a stress test to predict field emergence of carryover soybean seed. L E Everson of Iowa State University said seeds stored in cool dry conditions stand better, while high humidity and heat degrade viability. A stress test at 104 F for 30 hours followed by germination in sterile sand shows 2 year results aligning with field emergence. samples above 80 percent are likely good, below 60 percent likely poor. Seed treatment may help but below 80 percent stress test is questionable for grower use.
