Changes Seen in Fire Sprinkler Systems Code
Cedar Rapids may adopt changes to fire prevention rules requiring automatic sprinkler systems in major new buildings. Assistant fire chief Robert H. Ellison told city council the plan applies to new construction only, covering large stores factories and other buildings with heavy public use. Existing buildings would not need sprinklers unless remodeling equals or exceeds 50 percent of value. Ellison noted many structures already have sprinklers for economic reasons, with installation costs often offset by eight to ten years of lower insurance and lighter wall construction needs. The changes follow National Fire Prevention Bureau standards.
