Elvis buys FDR yacht for polio fund

Elvis Presley has purchased the 165 foot Potomac yacht once owned by Franklin D. Roosevelt at an auction in Long Beach. Col Tim Parker, his manager, bid $55,000 and plans to donate the yacht to the March of Dimes in memory of the late president. Roosevelt started the campaign in 1938 to aid polio victims.

Stradivarius Survives Fall During Trondheim Concert

American violinist Gabriel Banat dropped his 1682 Stradivarius during a dramatic passage in Trondheim. Conductor Paul Olefsky accidentally struck the instrument, which cracked but remained playable after a brief halt. Banat continued with a borrowed violin.

Actor Joseph Schildkraut left most of his estate to his wife Leonora Rogers Schildkraut valued beyond 50000 dollars. He bequeathed his German language library to Brandeis University and paintings to Brandeis and the Hollywood Museum. He also left 3000 dollars to Herb Meadow’s son and his violin to the Mer embloom Youth Orchestra of Santa Monica. He died January 21 in New York while rehearsing a Broadway musical.

Crawford C. Hubbell a Des Moines banker was named treasurer of the Iowans for Goldwater committee Friday. Committee Chairman James Wilson Carroll newspaper publisher said the group will open a state headquarters at the Savery hotel here next. Hubbell is vice president and director of Bankers Trust Co.

Drunk Driver Lewis Pleads Guilty in Iowa City

Howard Leo Lewis, 43, of route two, pled guilty in district court to a drunken driving charge. He was fined $300 plus costs.
