Iowa National Guard Reorganization Under Brig. Gen. Williams
Brig. Gen. Frank P. Williams of Cedar Falls now commands the 34th Infantry as part of a reorganized Iowa National Guard. The new leadership includes Brig. Gen. Ted H. Corry of Davenport as assistant commander and Col. Robert D. Vernon of Cedar Rapids as chief of staff, with Col. Karl F. Herd of Davenport as brigade commander and Col. Joseph B. Flatt of Winterset as support commander. Vernon previously served as deputy brigade commander. The acceptance ends a long dispute between state and federal officials over streamlining guard units, with officials noting the plan improves on a federal proposal that would have closed armor in many towns. The reorganization removes the 3rd howitzer battalion.
