Price of Meat High Despite Livestock Cuts
AP reporting from Chicago notes that retail meat prices remain largely unchanged despite lower livestock costs. H. M. Conway of the National Livestock Producers warns price lag in wholesale and retail values keeps consumer costs high, while margins boost processing and retail profits. He predicts continued producer‑consumer price maladjustments through the year and expects hog supplies to tighten early, with partial offset from later increases. Government data hint at a 22 percent rise in Corn Belt cattle feeding, though experts deem it overstated and misrepresentative of actual on‑feed cattle and marketing timing. Substantial reductions in cattle supplies are anticipated for late winter and early spring due to short fed crops and delayed finish times.

Farmers' prices fall while consumer costs lag
The piece discusses shrinking farmer returns as consumer prices stay high, noting dairy and grain dynamics, government supports, and storage pressures. It cites low U.S. milk cow numbers, rising butter production, and potential corn acreage limits, with storage capacity shortages and possible government action on grain reserves. It ends by recalling the trend of scarce home orchards as nursery catalogs arrive.

Fruit growing at home and easing alcohol myths
Many farms abandon old orchards but can plant small fruit beds for canning or freezing. New insecticides help control pests with spray equipment becoming common. Producing fruit at home brings enjoyment. A Muscatine alcohol plant correction notes malt for corn ratio and the high cost of malt drives interest in mold method fermentation.
