Hog farmers challenge Des Moines nitrate suit claims

A Des Moines Water Works nitrate pollution lawsuit faces pushback from hog farmers led by Mason who says scientific proof is lacking. Iowa produced about 49 million hogs in 2012, roughly a third of U.S. pork, while spokesman Dave Struthers asserts no evidence supports plaintiffs. He emphasizes health and safety while noting EPA response delays cited as the legal basis.

Linn County supervisors weigh salary raises for top officials

The Linn County Supervisors will discuss Compensation Board recommendations on Monday including raises for Gardner from 129,568 to 143,058 and Vander Sanden from 157,266 to 161,984. Auditor Joel Miller says a 100,000 salary could draw more candidates for several offices, while Langston and Rogers argue for smaller increases aligned with other county employees. Gardner sought a larger bump to align with high paid law enforcement, and the panel also links deputy salaries to elected officials. The debate follows a move two years ago to full-time supervisors and a related petition drive for reform.
