Rep Ely Pays Own Way at Iowa Farm Bureau Dinner
Iowa Representative John M. Ely Jr. follows a personal ethics rule by paying his own meals at legislator events. He often arrives late or declines invitations to limit costs, with past dinners costing him as little as 2.50, though others run higher. Ely began this policy in 1961 after returning free football tickets and continues to prorate costs to attend while seeking to expand his understanding of state issues.
