Fire damaged the kitchen at the James Kelsey residence at 825 Cave NW. Officials say the daughter ignited a paper in a stove flame, causing curtains to flare and injuring a wall and cupboards.

Fall at Milwaukee station leads to federal case transfer

Katherine Scheel of California sues the Milwaukee railroad for $150,000 in Linn county court after a fall on August 28 at the Marion depot. She charges negligence for wax on the floor and no warning. Injuries include back pain and facial nerve paralysis affecting taste and left face and throat. The case was moved Thursday to Cedar Rapids federal district court.

December Fire Loss Sets City Record for 1958

Cedar Rapids suffered its largest monthly fire loss of 1958 at $62,635.62, nearly doubling the prior high from January. The report by Fire Chief Jesse Hunter notes $41,706.99 of damage to buildings and $540,360 in contents, with insurance covering all but $3,075.

Strawberry Point Man Found Dead in Silo

Leslie J. Kenney aged 52 was found dead in a farm silo near Strawberry Point on Wednesday afternoon. Death attributed to a heart attack. his son Thomas 15 discovered the body.
