U S ambassador Joseph C. Grew filed formal representations with the foreign office after Wednesday's Han kow raid in which anti aircraft shells struck the Luzon gunboat and its barge. A radioman was slightly wounded, and the shells were thought to be small caliber from Chinese anti aircraft guns.
A Japanese spokesman reported that Chinese eighth route army units were exploding fire crackers to mask a serious lack of ammunition, a claim reported from Peiping.

John Stramel 51 of Cedar Rapids suffered severe bruises and cuts after falling from a car traveling 40 to 50 mph on highway 30 about 21 miles west of Cedar Rapids. Returning from Eldora with his wife and son-in-law Roy Owens, Stramel opened the door to eject an object, wind seized the door and pulled him out. He was treated at St Luke's hospital around 9 p.m. Friday.
Mrs. Bertha Wilkinson Bailey wife of Dr Frederick William Bailey died about midnight Friday at University hospital Iowa City after a brief illness. Funeral Monday at 2 p.m. at Turner's chapel Rev Robert Little to officiate. Survived by husband a daughter Mrs Joe Wheeler Jr and two sisters Ida Wilkinson and Nellie Nolan. Mrs Wheeler and their son Frederick travel to Cedar Rapids from Maplewood New Jersey. She had been a Cedar Rapids resident and belonged to the Church of Our Lady of Grace.
