Cedar Rapids mansion slated for demolition to expand clinic
Mark Stoffer Hunter notes the 1884 Clark mansion at 824 Third Ave SE, Cedar Rapids, faces demolition after March 1 to make way for expansion of Physicians' Clinic of Iowa. The house, a historic Mansions Hill residence once home to Charles H. Clark, stands among several surviving mansions in original locations on Mansion Hill, many moved or lost since the 1930s.

Harsh Iowa winter of 1936 remembered by History Center
Photos from January 1936 show a 20 inch blizzard as Iowa endured record cold and heavy snow. Temperatures hit 33 below in the north and 22 below in the south while 42.9 inches fell across the season. Transportation collapsed, coal and milk ran short, farmers were marooned up to seven weeks, then Dust Bowl drought deepened as summer arrived. Jami Roskamp, History Center curator, notes the contrast with today.
