State Plans To Expand Testing Program for Hog Brucellosis

Iowa will extend its hog brucellosis testing to all 16 slaughter plants within 60 to 80 days to meet California standards. Agriculture Secretary Lounsberry notes brands from Brucellosis free zones will be required for pigs entering California after July 1, 1973. The program, costing about 200000 annually plus 150000 for herd validation, aims to protect Iowa exports valued at about 1800 dollars per producer and support the national eradication target by end of 1975. Continuous testing cost per head at plants runs 15 to 20 cents, with reactors traced to origin and damaged stock indemnified from county funds. The program is backed by county funds and federals, with Iowa’s brucellosis effort praised as among the nation’s best.
