Senator Submits Bill For National Grain Stockpile Plan

In Washington Senator Elmer Thomas proposes a New Deal style ever normal granary to stockpile farm surpluses. The measure would let the agriculture secretary obtain storage via loans or direct construction, set targets for wheat 400 million bushels corn 600 million and cotton 4.5 million bales, and shield farmers from price swings while not counting warehoused surpluses in national supply. It would exempt 1949 wheat and cotton crops from future acreage allocations and seek farmer votes on marketing quotas after stockpile goals are reached.
