Food stamp enrollment rises 8 percent statewide

Convicted con man dies in Oakdale hospice unit
Wilfred Francis Rice 71, a con man who swindled Dorothy Schramm out of more than 164000, died last week in the hospice unit of the Iowa Medical and Classification Center Oakdale while serving a 10 year sentence for first degree theft in Des Moines County. He used a false name and Social Security number and moved to Burlington in 1993 after Illinois Supreme Court censure. He met Schramm in 1995 and drained her finances between 1998 and 2000. Rice had set up a dummy company with gifts claimed but unauthorised by Schramm. His victims had settled most claims in 2002. He died amid his cancer battle while jailed.

C R duo charged in identity theft in Vinton
Cedar Rapids residents Roger Eugene Hole and Brenda Lee Albers were arrested on identity theft and forgery charges after obtaining victim Charles Kulhavy’s personal information from his Vinton residence and using it to obtain credit cards and cash advances totaling over 2500 dollars. They appeared in Benton County Magistrate Court January 16 and were released on their own recognizance.

Independence teen dies in single-vehicle rollover crash
Independence 18 year old Rachel A Reuter died in a rollover on Buchanan County Road W-40 about 1 40 a m 11 miles southeast of Independence. She was driving south unbelted and pronounced dead at the scene. The crash remains under investigation.

Car and buggy collision injures two in Kalona
At 7 52 p m a horse drawn buggy directed by 16 year old Jeffrey Miller of Kalona failed to yield to a car driven by 38 year old Gina Saxton of North Liberty on 540th Street crossing Highway 1. Saxton was transported to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics but not admitted. The Iowa State Patrol is investigating.

Investigation continues in case of unconscious man in Sigourney
Police investigate Dennis Thornburg in Sigourney Keokuk County after he was found unconscious with injuries from a fall. He was transported to a local health center and then Mercy Iowa City as investigators with the Division of Criminal Investigation review the incident.
