Israel Yet Again Hails Deal on Reform and Conservative Conversions
Israel’s chief rabbinate agreed that the state may recognize Reform and Conservative conversions for civil purposes, a first across the three streams. The pact, needing Knesset approval, leaves issues on marriage burial and local council inclusion unresolved, with Orthodox authorities cautioning it does not admit these conversions as Jewish law. Civil recognition would apply only to conversions performed in Israel and would stamp the conversion date on identity cards without distinguishing the conversion type.
