Harkin says ethanol compromise safe in Clinton plans

Senator Tom Harkin said he was assured by Budget Director Leon Panetta that the ethanol compromise will not be rescinded and should return to the pipeline within 10 days to two weeks. Air pocket in corn blamed in deaths

Three men, Steven Kuper 22 and Mark Allamand 23, both of Scotch Grove, along with Marvin Jacobs, died after entering a 30 000 bushel corn bin on a farm near Scotch Grove. An ice covered air pocket caused them to fall in while removing ice. Marvin Jacobs escaped and called authorities as rescue workers worked over an hour to free them.

Marion man first Iowa patient to use new cancer test

Wayne Belden of Marion became the first Iowan to undergo a new cancer test approved just weeks earlier. The SPECT gamma camera method uses radioactive monoclonal antibodies to light up cancer cells, aiding tumor localization and guiding surgery decisions at Mercy Medical Center. Marine shot and killed on patrol in Mogadishu
