Inmate boarding fees threaten Linn County jail funding
Linn County Sheriff's Office notes a proposed cut in state prisoner housing payments to $25 a day could jeopardize no new tax jail expansion funds. Linn County may miss federal grant for more sheriff deputies
Linn County may not use a $1.2 million federal grant to hire two deputies due to budget timing. Sheriff Don Zeller said that approval was not officially received and the plan dates back to 1999, with decisions affected by the new fiscal cycle. The grant funds up to 75 percent of salaries for three years, up to $75,000 per officer, while state and local funds cover the rest. Other Iowa towns also receive money under the COPS program.
