Oregon State, 15-1 overall and 5-0 Pac-10, held off Arizona 59-55 as Dean DerRah sank two free throws with 10 seconds left and forced a charging foul four seconds later. The game matched former Iowa coaches Ralph Miller and Lute Olson.
In a high scoring set, Oregon State’s Steve Woodside led with 15 points while Morgan Taylor of Arizona had 18 as Arizona State held a slim one point margin with 23 seconds left. Tulsa beat Tulsa 17 Hurricane 30 points from Steve Harris propelled Tulsa to 15-2. Louisiana Tech topped McNeese State with Karl Malone 21 points 14 rebounds as UNLV dominated New Mexico State 92-70 led by Richie Adams 22 and Anthony Jones 20.
Cedar Rapids Washington, ranked third, used stifling defense to overpower Iowa City High 61 to 25 in Mississippi Valley Conference play. Katie Abrahamson led with 27 points and 13 rebounds as the Warriors improved to 12-3 overall and 7-2 in the league, while City High drops to 5-10.
Linn-Mar tops the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union power ratings with 139.68 points, followed by Clinton and Davenport Assumption. Principal Lions Kim Podgorski dominates several events while teammates Amy Jordan and Janelle Emerson post top-five marks in multiple apparatuses. Others named include Michele Prosser of Marion and Christy Curtis of Cedar Rapids Washington.
Purdue, trailing by eight, roared back led by Steve Reid who scored 17 including four late free throws. Troy Lewis sparked a 3-straight-basket stretch as Purdue topped 13th-ranked Indiana 62-52, moving to 4-3 in the Big Ten and 13-4 overall. Indiana fell to 3-3 in conference play.
Iowa beat Northwestern 66 to 47 while Michigan won 86 to 75 over Michigan State. Minnesota defeated Wisconsin 72 to 62. Purdue topped Indiana 62 to 52. Illinois led Ohio State 84 to 66. Michigan moved into a tie for first with Illinois after beating Michigan State 73? Noted: Roy Tarpley 17 for Michigan. Sam Vincent 29 for Michigan State. Minnesota's Tommy Davis 21 led their win. standings show Michigan 5-2, Minnesota 4-2, Wisconsin 1-5, Iowa 4-2.
