The maneuver battalion of about 1,000 men marks the first large U S combat presence in the area under Viet Cong influence. Stern Cuts of Death of a President serialization
Stern magazine in Hamburg voluntarily trims 122 lines from its 7911 line German serialization of William Manchester's The Death of a President. The edits remove passages about Mrs Kennedy personal concerns at the time of the assassination. Stern cites political censorship concerns and notes faster publication of the uncut text elsewhere. The civil court had allowed Stern to publish uncut material, while editor Henri Nannen defends reporting the historical truth. A Soviet magazine published part of Stern’s uncut text but omitted references to Lee Harvey Oswald and related topics.
