More Soft Corn Needed To Keep Up Milk Output

Ames The high moisture corn this year does not feed as well as sound corn for dairy cattle warns Floyd Johnston extension dairyman. Soft corn has less dry matter per pound requiring about 10 pounds to replace 8 pounds of good corn. Dry matter this year may run 65 70 percent, reducing usefulness per bushel. Ground soft corn heats and spoils, so keep moist particles separate and grind weekly in cold weather. A cow milking 6 8 gallons needs 12 15 pounds grain with two thirds corn if hay is alfalfa.
