Congress Maps Billion Dollar Defense Fund
Congressional leaders moved to fast track national defense measures with a proposed record peace time appropriation of about 1.0 billion dollars. Representative Tilman B. Parks indicated a report within 10 days calling for roughly 575 million for the War Department, including 129 million for rivers and harbors previously authorized. The Navy would receive about 551 million, with the aim of parity in air, land and sea forces as House committees consider several related measures. The army seeks approximately 800 planes as part of a broader five year program.
