Amateur satellite PCSat proves durable in orbit
The 25 pound prototype communications satellite built by U.S. Naval Academy students has operated for four months. Launched aboard an Athena rocket from Kodiak Alaska on Sept 29 the cube shaped craft uses off the shelf parts with two dozen AA batteries and solar panels for power. It has a 2000 mile reception range and is used by ham radio operators to send single line texts. If solar radiation is favorable, PCSat could last up to three years.

Rise in illegal immigrants cited as decade shows growth
Census 2000 estimates indicate the United States had about 8.7 million undocumented immigrants in 2000, up nearly 5 million during the 1990s. Some 44 percent were from Mexico with many others from Middle Eastern nations. The record notes shifts after 9/11 toward tighter border controls and deportation actions against men from regions linked to al Qaida.
