Fire Charred Transmission Shop in Linn County

Lifelong Linn County resident Al Christophersen watched as fire destroyed his transmission shop a wooden barn built at the turn of the century at 6404 Mount Vernon Road SE. Firefighters from seven Eastern Iowa departments battled the blaze, leaving more than $200,000 in uninsured tools and equipment and a van damaged by ruptured fuel line. Christophersen, 48, stayed calm and said he would start over and perhaps find a second job.

East Iowa braced for 3 to 5 inch snow and high winds

Eastern Iowa faces a winter storm with 3 to 5 inches of snow and potential high winds. A winter weather advisory is in effect as temperatures plunge to the teens with wind chills possible. Cedarapids to add 50 to 70 jobs in Cedar Rapids as Pocatello plant closes

Cedarapids Inc will hire 50 to 70 production workers in Cedar Rapids this spring after moving a screen fabrication and assembly line from Pocatello Idaho. The firm will lay off 30 administrative staff, reducing overall workforce to about 900, with 860 employed in Cedar Rapids. The Pocatello plant will shutter after transfers to Glasgow Missouri and Cedar Rapids are completed in April.
