Dolphins are AFC champs from page 1B

The Dolphins earned the AFC championship in a game against the Jets. Miami's defense clamped down after a scoreless first half as Todd passed and Duke made key plays including a late interception. A pivotal fumble recovery and punt block shifted field position, setting up a 12 second 7 yard drive for the go ahead score.

Davenport meet showcases Cedar Rapids gymnasts domination

CRAG and STARS gymnasts from Cedar Rapids excelled at a USGF meet in Davenport. Wendy Thompson won all-around floor exercise uneven bars and vault in Class II 15-and-over. Janelle Emerson won all-around and balance beam in Class II 12-14. Raquel Ridenour claimed floor in Class II. Brian Dooley swept all-around vault uneven bars floor and balance beam in Class III 15-and-over, while Tina Cameron took uneven bars in Class III 12-14.

West wins Japan Bowl with 30 21 victory in Yokohama

In Yokohama Japan West quarterback duo Ken O'Brien and Scott Tinsley each threw for a touchdown and fullback John Tuggle scored after a fumble pickup as West beat East 30 21. Karl Morgan earned defensive MVP and SMU’s Richard Neely won the Joe Roth trophy. Joel Baxter opened scoring with a 26 yard field goal and Tuggle added a 1 yard TD.

Ahern Plumbing Leads At Women’s City Bowling Meet

Ahern Plumbing captured the first round lead with 3072 total pins at Jubilee Lanes in the Women’s City Bowling Tournament. Oscar’s Restaurant narrowly followed with 3068, while REC. (Vinton) stood third at 3062. Dorothy Rosenberg led singles with 708, and Schausenbuel and Kolsrud headed doubles with 1288. Class leaders were Mary Roseberry 1693, Judy Blank 1507, and Cheryl Sconyers 1413.

Utley Named Best Boxer At State Silver Gloves

Cedar Rapids Boxing Club won the open division at the State Silver Gloves Championships with 275 boxers from 35 clubs. Darin Utley earned outstanding boxer honors. CRBC champions included Jay Nelson 178 pounds, Steve Conger 119, Mark Waller 112 in 14-15. Warren Mundy 95, Utley 90, Lance Foreman 85 in 12-13 open. Other CRBC champs were Steve Engledow 10-11 open, Jody Engledow and Bill Lewis 12-13 novice. Runners-up included Ed O'Brien, Shotan Gibson 14-15, and Ed Foss 10-11.

Muhammad Wins Unanimous Decision In Nevada Fight

Eddie Mustafa Muhammad of New York defeated Jerry Celestine of New Orleans by unanimous 10 round decision in Stateline Nevada. The fight featured Muhammad, the top light heavyweight contender, maintaining dominance through all ten rounds. Celestine pressured early but Muhammad's offense and defense prevailed.
