Government loans boost Iowa corn storage

Iowa ASC reports 1954 investments funded new grain storage capacity of nearly three million bushels on farms. Dwight W. Meyer cites 1 103 farmers received 1 045 718 dollars at 80 percent of cost. four percent interest, repayable in four years.

Jersey Meeting Dates Are Set

The Iowa Jersey Cattle Club winter meeting will be in Memorial Union at Iowa State College on Friday February 4. Secretary Gaylord Lyon of Toledo has notified members. Prof C A Iverson will discuss new milk marketing methods and a Dairy Industry Commission representative will report on that group. Lyon listed dates for nine Jersey parish meetings.

Food Sales Up Two Percent in 1954

The Agriculture Department reports retail food sales rose two percent in 1954 versus 1953. Gains were strongest in the last quarter with a five cent rise from 1953. Wholesale farm prices have risen since mid-December while farmer prices lag behind. Milk production affects per pound costs, with higher yields lowering production costs per pound.

Four-H Leaders Day Planned at Iowa State College

The fifth annual Iowa 4-H Leaders Day will occur Monday January 31 at Iowa State College Ames. County leaders and extension staff will attend with morning talks by Kenneth H. Anderson and Ray Cunningham. The program ends with a Memorial Union banquet at 5 PM featuring Dr James H Hilton and E M Pee.

Monticello resident Max Specht is named head of the Jones County wine Producers' Association. Other officers include Ed Melgens of Monticello as vice president and Otto Danneman of Amber as secretary-treasurer.

They establish road districts Monroe College Washington Tec kson and Monroe townships and authorize tax spread against lands. They grant cigaret sale permit to Jessie B Doudna. Hormones Up Steer Gains At Purdue U

Purdue researchers report higher weight gains and better feed efficiency from oral hormones stilbestrol dienestrol and hexestrol in fattening steers. Gains reached 324 to 326 pounds with hormone use, though pelvic and mammary changes occurred and carcass grades were slightly lower. No hormones remained in meat after slaughter.

Sharp Upswing Noted in U S Meat Imports

Washington based American Meat Institute reports a sharp upswing in imports of canned hams and pork from Europe including Poland. The institute says this growth should push foreign partners to extend equal treatment to U S products and notes a record level for pork imports from all European countries.

Soils Program Shows Gains in Linn County

Linn County soil district reports 62 new cooperators and expansion of contour cropping by 1500 acres. Contour strip cropping added 432 acres and 63 miles of tile drains were installed. Waterways and open drains totaled 106 acres and 1 mile respectively. Five miles of terraces built with farmer equipment. Services aided 60 noncooperators for ACP payments with 41 miles of tile drains on those farms.

Superior Jersey Bull Royal Design Lindley Tops Breeding List

Royal Design Lindley a Jersey bull owned by the Eastern Iowa Artificial Breeding Association Cedar Rapids is named a superior sire by the American Jersey Cattle Club. He has 10 tested daughters averaging 8872 pounds of milk and 502 pounds of butterfat and 13 classified daughters averaging 85.96 points on the Jersey score card. The bull carries an excellent type rating and was bred by A A Hebedank Ada Minnesota and developed by Merle Simpson Spirit Lake.

Oliver Corp Reports Higher Net Income for 1954

The Oliver Corporation, farm equipment maker in Chicago, posted net income of 3,707,295 for year ending October 31, 1954, or 1.61 a share, up from 2,809,517 and 1.18 a share the prior year. Sales fell to 128,343,468 from 136,623,274.

1954 UK exports rise with Poland Denmark and Holland

The report shows total exports reaching 99 163 000 pounds in 1954, up 28 percent from 77 707 000 in 1953. Communist Poland shipped 19 717 000 pounds, up 39 percent, with Denmark and Holland also major contributors. The institute noted American exports to these countries are hindered by import restrictions licensing quotas exchange controls and tariff differences.

Four H Camping Center Faces Overwhelming Demand

Iowa 4 H Club Foundation reports requests to hold 20 additional camps at the state 4 H camping center exceed current capacity. The 553 acre Des Moines River site nine miles south of Boone, bought in 1950, costs roughly 24 thousand dollars with 217,669 raised of a 500 thousand goal. Funds come mainly from 4 H members and clubs.

Building Fertility Key Says Ohio Expert

Ohio State agronomist H. P. Mederski urges farmers to raise soil fertility rather than rely solely on raw fertilization. He says higher soil fertility improves yields in good years and resilience in dry or adverse conditions, without reducing overall fertilizer use.
