Culver to push $1 tobacco tax boost in budget
Iowa Governor Chet Culver will propose a $1 per pack cigarette tax increase in the FY2008 budget to raise 130 million to 150 million for health initiatives and to close a Medicaid gap. House Speaker Pat Murphy said Democrats may support 40 to 64 cent increases, not exceeding public tolerance. The plan also links tax changes to raising teacher pay and an Iowa Power Fund for renewable energy, with an accelerated minimum wage rise to $6.20 then $7.25 by 2007.
